tools off.architecture does not only try to think up ideas, but wants to realize them as well. after all, architecture is no architecture if it isn’t put into practice. you can not see the real beauty of a building on paper or in a computer, but only as a realized entity.
“we really want to build out designs, because when you’re realizing a project you get new unknown aspects and the first idea from starting a design develops steadily until you set the last screw - and this is the gripping aspect of building a project”
in 1995 eva durant and andreas notter founded tools off.architecture. they started entering competitions and realized some small projects for friends and family. the first real breakthrough was an assignment for jung v.matt to transform an old industrial building. the client was so satisfied that another project followed. slowly but surely, they won a reputation for being stylish and original architects. bmw, audi and mtv became new clients.
they don’t try to realize one particular style or to look for a higher ideology. they try to design and realize an assignment as good as possible. the attention has to be focused on the architecture and on the solution of difficulties involved with the assignment. still, we can put that it is a complex and technically thought-out architecture. so their work is a magnificent combination of aesthetics and technology.
they started using the name tools off.architecture when they were still students of william alsop at the hochschule für künste in bremen. they wanted to show that architecture is a wide field and one needs some tools to work on it. they didn’t knew at that time what part in architecture they were most interested in. is it urban design, architecture, interior design or product design, or maybe all of them? the word off. has a double meaning: off like off theatre or off culture. expressing something new, beyond the established. the other meaning is the short form of office = off.
architecture through a technical and creative approach, it seems to be typical for a high-technology country like germany. the german touch is also here noticeable.
