market hall by miller and maranta

it is like a discovery in a small city like aarau to find the market hall designed by miller and maranta. the building is situated in de middle of old streets and squares with traditional suisse architecture. the contrast couldn’t be sharper. wood against limestone, light against dense. in spite of this it stands with a certain strength and dominance. it's a kind of ironical minimalism that is so typical suisse. its simplicity in form and construction give a perfect synthesis of what architecture should be.

the form is mainly characterized by the rhythm of the wooden construction and its concrete basement. the building follows the angle of the houses and street like it has always been naturally like this. at one side more noticeable than to the other. in the interior only a single column breaks the rhythm and open space. trough the open construction light penetrates the building all around. two wooden doors can be rolled open.
