in the eighties wiel arets was one of the few who started with a pure and simple in form kind of architecture. the breakthrough in his career came with the academy of art and architecture in maastricht. the result was a minimal aesthetic, a building consisting of 2 blocks both based on nine-square "cubes".

both blocks are linked by a bridge which is just like the facades a
complete mixture of concrete and glass. the facade consists of glass stones within a concrete frame. just like corbusier used them once. a very modernist design/approach you could say.

wiel arets calls it a “virus”, something totally strange that makes an environment as its habitat, while it is not expected to be there. in one or an other way you could say it’s all artificial. human architecture transforms. wiel arets wants his architecture to distinguish itself from the environment it is located in.

architect: wiel arets
place: maastricht, the netherlands
