after a lot of criticism of the city which calls the building the “ten storey grater”, it seems to be final, rem koolhaas’s design for prada in san francisco has been definitively stopped. prada, just like others finds out about the difficulties and limitations when it comes up to realizing new ideas. though that it probably wasn’t the only reason. the idea of the 11th of september just didn’t existed the day the exhibition on the prada architecture projects was held in milan. the economic crisis and the enormous debts of prada would certainly also have been an important cause.
prada comissioned two architecture firms, “oma/amo” and “herzog and de meuron” for their creativity in order to create “the prada-experience”. it was a huge architectural project presented in an exhibition in milan. a task given to rem koolhaas was to design the three stores in the usa. the new york prada store (2,100 square metres), the los angeles prada store (1,900 square metres) and the san francisco prada store (4,000 square metres). the store in soho, new york was finished last year. the location in san francisci already was bought in 1966 by prada with the idea to have a shop on that particular place.
