INFORMATION

In the eighties the village of Vals bought five hotels near the thermal springs. The idea of a spa center was launched and Swiss architect Peter Zumthor was selected as designer. The facility was built between 1993 and 1996. It became an icon in contemporary architecture. The building was built with the local Valser quarzite stone. The entire structure consists of one element puzzled into a cave like spacial composition. Each unit has a cantilevered concrete roof. The grass roof consists of open joints covered with glass.
