INFORMATION
Dom Hans van der Laan studied architecture in Delft. In 1927, he became a monk of the Abbey of Oosterhout and came to the Abbey of Vaals in 1968. Together with his brother Nico he taught church architecture from 1945 until 1973. The objective was a rediscovery of the criteria and basic principles of real architecture.
The abbey church in Vaals represents the first fully developed example of their studies, an impressive entity, consisting of upper church, crypt and atrium, completed in 1968. Since that time Dom Hans van der Laan built several other monasteries. The province of Limburg awarded him the Prize for Architecture in recognition of all his achievements. In 1977 he published his life’s work “The Architectonic Space” .
